In southwestern Kentucky, right on the border that separates the Bluegrass State from Tennessee, is Fort Campbell, home of the infamous 101st Airborne Division. The division is known for its innovative role in helping the Allies defeat the D-Day Normandy invasion during Operation Overlord. Those stationed at Fort Campbell are just a short distance south of downtown Hopkinsville, KY, although Clarksville, TN is also nearby.

One of the most famous forts in the world, Fort Knox is located about 45 miles southwest of Louisville, KY. Home to 12,000 people, Fort Knox spans three counties and is one of the largest military installations in the United States. The military bases in KY or the rest of the world aren't much bigger, but they aren't much richer either.

Fort Knox is infamous for holding America's stockpile of bullion. It has a total of 4,583 tons, which equates to about $291 billion depending on the market. Although it is one of two military bases in Kentucky, it is also home to the United States Marine Corps. The General George Patton Leadership Museum is a popular tourist attraction, and James Bond fans can see familiar sights as part of the movie Goldfinger, which was filmed at Fort Knox.

In addition to KY's two military bases, there is also BGAD. Like an active Army military base in Kentucky, it is used as a storage site for chemical weapons and munitions. It is also used by the US military to repair supplies.

BGAD is home to most of the explosive munitions used by the military, chemical materials monitoring programs, and molten salt research and development facilities. Of course, access is restricted to the public for security reasons, and BGAD also performs quality assurance for the military.
