Each school will cost $2.4 million to design and $45 million to demolish and rebuild, officials said. During the course of the project, it is not expected that classes will be interrupted.

Bill Billingsley, the district's director of student services and communications, said the $94.8 million project is the result of three years of planning and grant writing to get money from the Defense Department's Office of Financial Adjustment.

In 2011, the Department of Defense evaluated the conditions of 147 schools on bases across the country in an effort to create equity between campuses.

Camp Pendleton's two schools were named the most overcrowded elementary schools in the country, with many classes held in portable buildings rather than original school buildings.

However, the schools did not top the list in need of replacement because the buildings were in overall good condition after being renovated with money from a district bond approved in 2002.

Mary Fay Pendleton was ranked 21st on the priority list and San Onofre was ranked 22nd.

Neither qualified for the first round of funding to improve military schools at the time, but a Defense Department official said in 2011 that the award was part of what would be an ongoing strategy to ensure quality education for military families.

Billingsley said the district is honored to be the recipient of another round of Defense Department funding.

"We value the excellent partnership with our military families and look forward to providing our K-8 students with a state-of-the-art, world-class learning environment," he said.

The new schools will include upgraded educational technology, additional space for art, music and music classes and improved drop-off areas for students and buses, Billingsley said.

The new schools will be built next to the existing schools, work is expected to start in the academic year 2016-17.

San Onofre School has an enrollment of 820 students and was built in 1974 with a second phase in 1977 for 449 students.
