B 26 Marauders - The Martin B-26 Marauder is an American twin-engine medium bomber. The first flight took place on 25 November 1940. The aircraft was first deployed to Oceania in early 1942, later it was also used for missions in the Mediterranean and Western Europe. A total of 5157 copies were made.

When the B-26 entered service, several accidents occurred, earning the aircraft the nickname "Widow Maker". Accidents decreased after a series of aerodynamic improvements, including raising the wings.

The USAAF deployed the B-26 to Western Europe in early 1943. Early assignments consisted of low-altitude flying over North Africa. These missions failed. The second mission, an unescorted attack on a power plant at IJmuiden, resulted in the loss of the entire group of ten B-26s.

As a result of this and other bad experiences, the aircraft's armament was improved and a decision was made to develop the aircraft to higher altitudes. These measures worked. In 1944–1945 USAAF B-26 squadrons suffered the lowest losses of any American day bomber.
